In the second episode of our series on #RespectLawOfTheSea on the occasion of the European elections, we explain the legal basis for assigning a „Place of Safety“ for those rescued in the Mediterranean. Libya is not a safe place! We call on all MEPs to abide by the law. Stand up for people to disembark in a safe place after being rescued at sea.

This third video of our series #RespectLawOfTheSea shows the administrative, political and judicial harassment received by Search and Rescue NGOs since 2017. The blocking of search and rescue NGOs is neglecting the duties and obligations of States and shipmasters to rescue people in danger at sea. An increasing number of people are at risk of drowning and the civil society can no longer witness and report on this humanitarian tragedy.

Fourth video of our series #RespectLawOfTheSea: Since the arbitrary closure of Italian ports in June 2018, rescue ships remain stranded at sea for days or weeks. SOS MEDITERRANEE call on European States to set up an effective, coherent and transparent disembarkation system to a place where all survivors will be safe, in compliance with international law.

„Be humane, save lives at sea, respect the law!“

Since 2014 nearly 20,000 people have died trying to flee via the Mediterranean (IOM) – a humanitarian disaster that continues and could have been avoided if European states had employed enough means to save people from ditress at sea.

In this latest summarizing video of our series #RespectLawOfTheSea, we take a look back at five years of deterioration and violations of international maritime and humanitarian law in the Central Mediterranean.
